Strong match

Who this is for

  • Symphonic and orchestral tenor trombone on a large-bore horn
  • Players who tire in the upper register on a deeper cup
  • Anyone wanting a darker core than a stock student mouthpiece

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Small-bore jazz horns — the large shank will not seat
  • Bass trombonists needing a wider 2AL-class rim and cup
  • Lead players chasing bright cut and edge

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Denis Wick DW4880 Classic Series Trombone Mouthpiece in Gold 4.5AL construction detail

Detail 01

Large shank

Fits large-bore tenor and bass receivers only. A small-bore horn needs the 'S' models instead.

Detail 02

25.85mm cup diameter

Sits between the 5AL and 4AL. Slightly more lip inside the rim than a 5, without a 4's demands.

Detail 03

6.80mm rim width

Wide rim spreads pressure over more lip, which helps endurance on long rehearsals and concerts.

Detail 04

7.24mm throat

Fairly open bore. Moves more air for volume, but takes steadier support than a tight throat.

Detail 05

Barrel backbore

Straight-walled taper that darkens and centers the sound rather than adding brightness or edge.

Detail 06

Gold plating

Softer feel on the lip than silver. Chosen by players whose skin reacts to silver plate.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Check your horn's receiver — this is large shank, not small
  2. 02Mouthpiece only; no pouch, brush or case included
  3. 03Expect a week or two of adjustment before judging the change

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my student trombone?

Only if it has a large-shank receiver. Most student tenors are small shank, where this will not seat properly. Denis Wick makes small-shank 'S' versions of similar sizes.

02What is the difference between 4.5AL and 5AL?

The 4.5AL has a slightly larger cup (25.85mm vs 25.73mm) and a wider rim. The 5AL's deeper cup and larger bore push projection; the 4.5AL blows easier up top.

03Is gold plating worth the extra cost over silver?

Tonally the cup and backbore do the work. Gold's advantage is feel and skin tolerance — worth it if silver irritates your lip, otherwise a preference.

04Is this good for bass trombone?

It is a tenor size. Bass players generally want the wider rim and larger cup of a 2AL, 1AL or 0AL.
