Strong match

Who this is for

  • Orchestral players needing volume and a broad sound in tutti passages
  • Strong embouchures that fatigue on narrow rims during long rehearsals
  • Players on a Denis Wick 1 or 1C wanting more rim

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Lead and commercial work; the 5E and 3E are the screamer cups
  • Beginners, since a 17.50mm cup takes air and embouchure strength
  • Anyone struggling for endurance above the staff; a 3 or 4 fits better

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Denis Wick DW4882 Classic Series Trumpet Mouthpiece in Gold 1X construction detail

Detail 01

17.50mm cup diameter

The widest in this range. More lip vibrates, so the sound gets bigger and darker, and the high register gets harder.

Detail 02

5.23mm rim width

Extra wide, so pressure spreads across more lip. Helps on long sessions, feels slightly less precise on fast articulation.

Detail 03

3.90mm throat

Wide bore that lets air move freely for volume, but it feels loose if you are not pushing enough air.

Detail 04

Barrel backbore

Keeps resistance even through the register and holds the sound together at high volume rather than letting it spread.

Detail 05

Based on the Wallace 1870 F trumpet

Modeled on a 19th-century large-bore design, which is why cup and rim run larger than most modern trumpet mouthpieces.

Detail 06

Gold plating

Smoother on the lip than silver and slower to wear through. It does not change cup, rim or throat dimensions.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Wider in both cup and rim than the 1 and 1C; not a lateral move
  2. 02Expect a break-in period, since a wider rim shifts where the lip sets
  3. 03Plating wears where it rubs. Keep it in a pouch, not loose in a bag

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Is the 1X too big for me?

If you already play a Denis Wick 1 or 1C comfortably, the step to 17.50mm is small. Coming from a 3 or 4, expect the upper register to take real work.

02What is the difference between the 1X and the 1C?

The 1C is 17.25mm with a 5mm rim, built to play easier and more flexibly with better upper-register focus. The 1X is wider in cup and rim, aimed at symphonic size and comfort.

03Will gold plating help my endurance?

Only indirectly. Gold feels smoother and warmer than silver, so the rim grabs less. The 5.23mm rim width does far more for comfort than the plating does.

04Does it fit a standard Bb trumpet?

Yes, it uses the standard trumpet shank found on Bb, C, D and Eb trumpets. Cornet and flugelhorn use different shanks and will not take it.
