Strong match

Who this is for

  • Students who need quick response and easy flexibility across slurs
  • Players with smaller lips who fight larger diameters
  • Concert band and lesson use where tone matters more than screaming range

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Lead trumpet work — no shallow A cup or tight backbore here
  • Players wanting a big orchestral sound; .665 inch is narrow for that
  • Budget shoppers — this is student sizing at a premium price

Schilke Heavyweight Series Trumpet Mouthpiece in Gold 13 Gold construction detail

Detail 01

16.89mm / .665 inch cup diameter

The narrowest trumpet size in Schilke's Heavyweight line. Less lip vibrating means easier control, less volume ceiling.

Detail 02

Number 3 rim

Rounder than the semi-flat 4 rim. Easier to move on for flexibility and fast response, at the cost of some upper-register comfort.

Detail 03

C cup

Deeper than the shallow A cups in this line. Gives the small diameter enough cup volume to produce real tone.

Detail 04

26 throat

Schilke's standard trumpet throat. More open than the tight 27 used on their lead pieces, tighter than the 24 on the Symphony M models.

Detail 05

Heavyweight profile

Extra mass in the blank versus the Standard Series. Same dimensions inside, noticeably heavier and more solid in the receiver.

Detail 06

Gold plating

The premium finish, and most of why this costs what it does. Dimensionally identical to the silver version.

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Is a 13 too small for me?

It's the smallest diameter Schilke offers in this line at .665 inch. Players moving from a standard 7C-size piece will notice a tighter, more confined feel on the lip.

02Why does a student mouthpiece cost this much?

The 13 sizing is aimed at developing players, but this is the gold-plated Heavyweight blank. You're paying for the finish and the extra mass, not the dimensions.

03What does Heavyweight actually change?

Just mass. The cup, rim and throat match the standard 13. The blank has more metal around it, so it sits heavier in the horn.

04Will this help my high range?

It isn't built for that. Schilke's high-register pieces use a shallow A cup, a number 4 rim and a tight a-backbore. This has a C cup, a 3 rim and a 26 throat.
