01Is the 14A4 good for a beginner?
Not really. Shallow A cups reward a developed embouchure and reduced air. A student is usually better served by a standard C cup like the model 13, which gives more room for tone.
02What does the 4 in 14A4 mean?
It's the rim contour. Number 4 is Schilke's semi-flat, wider rim, chosen for endurance. Number 3 is the standard rounder rim and number 2 is narrower and rounder still.
03What's the difference between 14A4 and 14A4a?
The cup and rim are the same. The trailing lowercase a means a tight a-backbore, which adds resistance and helps range. Without it you get the standard c-backbore and a freer blow.
04Will this work on a cornet?
No. It's a trumpet mouthpiece with a trumpet shank. Schilke's cornet-oriented pieces are the funnel-cup models such as the 11E and 8mmE2.
