Strong match

Who this is for

  • Brass band players sitting on long rehearsals and contest programs
  • Players who like the Wick 4 but fatigue on the rim
  • Anyone chasing a deep, rich cornet tone with stable pitch

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Trumpet players — this is a cornet shank, not a trumpet fit
  • Players wanting a bright, cutting lead sound
  • Small-cup players stepping up too fast from a shallow piece

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Denis Wick DW4881 Classic Series Cornet Mouthpiece in Gold 4W construction detail

Detail 01

16.4mm cup diameter

Middle of the Wick range. Enough room for a full sound without the endurance cost of the 17mm 2.

Detail 02

5.55mm rim width

The widest rim in this series apart from the BW pieces. Spreads pressure over more lip, so you last longer.

Detail 03

4.58mm throat

On the open side. Air moves freely and the low register fills out, but you have to feed it.

Detail 04

Open backbore

Less resistance than the V-type B models. Bigger, rounder sound; slightly less focus and edge up high.

Detail 05

Gold finish

Feels smoother on the lip than silver and is the usual choice if silver plating irritates your skin.

Detail 06

Same cup as the 4

Tone and pitch center match the standard 4. Only the rim contact changes, so the switch is low risk.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Cornet shank only — it will not seat in a trumpet or flugelhorn receiver
  2. 02Mouthpiece alone. No pouch, case, or brush included
  3. 03A wider rim changes flexibility. Give it two weeks before judging slurs

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01What's the difference between the 4 and the 4W?

Cup, throat and backbore are identical. The 4W has a 5.55mm rim instead of 5.27mm, so lip pressure spreads wider and you tire more slowly. Tone stays the same.

02Will this fit my trumpet?

No. It's a cornet mouthpiece with a cornet shank. Trumpet receivers take a different taper.

03Is gold better than silver?

Not tonally. Gold feels slicker on the lip and avoids the skin reactions some players get from silver plating.

04Is a 4W too big for a student?

It's a mid-size cup, not extreme. A student moving off a stock mouthpiece can handle it, but expect to build air support for the open throat.
